Pougnet praised Desert Princess Country Club officials this week for “remarkable forward thinking” as he toured new Coyote Field — then huddled with team officials at the championship golf course to review the SoCal Coyotes 2014 community impact initiatives. The SoCal Coyotes, a non-profit sports leadership organization that fields a professional football team, briefed the Mayor on their upcoming seasons in the Professional Spring American Football League, followed by a 10-game season this fall in the National Developmental Professional Football League. The two-term Mayor toured the Desert Princess facilities with Country Club manager Brandon O’Neill, then received an overview from golf superintendent Jonas Conlan, who engineered the conversion of the course driving range to Coyote Field. Over breakfast, Mayor Pougnet and Coyotes president and head coach J David Miller reviewed the team’s groundbreaking Head of Household Work Leadership program (HOWL); Coyote Pups Leadership Development curriculum; and ‘Head of the Pack’ Coyote Certified Leader middle schools program. Mayor Pougnet has been a resident of Palm Springs since 2001, and has served as an elected official since 2003, when he was first elected to City Council. He was elected to Mayor of Palm Springs in 2007, where he currently is serving his second term. Among his numerous notable accomplishments, Mayor Pougnet was the architect of the Palm Springs Hotel Incentive Program, which resulted in over 1,000 jobs, $150 million in economic investment, and 1,600 new hotel rooms. The Coyotes open their spring season in May on the road, and return May 25 to play their historic home opener at Coyote Field at Desert Princess. The Coyotes are frequent visitors, leaders and speakers with every middle school in the Palm Springs Unified School District, and with the support of corporate partner Chevrolet Cadillac La Quinta, have donated thousands of dollars within the PSUSD.
